A simple reliable bioassay method has been developed to examine feeding preferences of a young abalone, Haliotis discus. Methanol extracts of several algae, green, brown, and red ones, showed feeding-stimulating activity to a large or small extent on the abalone. This procedure proved to be applicable for the isolation of the phagostimulants from the algal extracts.
