We investigated the optimal conditions for anthocyanin production in suspension cultures of a Euphorbia millii cell strain obtained by successive cell-aggregate selections. A modified Gamborg's solution containing 5 to 7% sucrose (w/v), a 1:16 ratio of NH4+:NO3-, 30 mM of nitrogen source, 10-6 M 2, 4-D, 10-8 M BA, and low concentrations of Fe2+ and SO2-4 greatly increased anthocyanin production. 2, 4-D was superior to NAA in increasing anthocyanin production. In the anthocyanin production medium we established, E. millii cells produced 32 mg anthocyanin per liter per day.
