Abstract
A novel styryl sulfate, jaspisin (1), was isolated from a marine sponge, Jaspis sp. The structure was found to be sodium (E)-5, 6-dihydroxystyryl sulfate on the basis of its spectroscopic data. This sulfate inhibited fertilization of sea urchin gametes through blockade of exoplasmic membrane fusion with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 15 μg/ml.
