The purpose of this paper was to make clear the role of physical fitness training from the views of the term of “Keiko” which was used as the term of practice in kendo, the development process of the methods of practices in kendo, the relationship between kendo practices and skills of kendo, the characteristics of physical fitness of kendo players, and changes in physical fitness level after special practice in kendo named as Kan-geiko. Each of six kinds of kendo practices have been developed since kendo protectors and Shinai were made and used. The term of “Keiko” meant considering the history of kendo, and involved the thought that practicing kendo was living. All kendo practices might be available in training for kendo skills and physical fitness. It was possible that kendo players did skill training and specific and basal physical training by arranging the training load of kendo practices in conformity with training cycle and carrying out the special kendo practice such as Kan-geiko. However, there were the problems for physical fitness in kendo practices, such as planning training load and limit, universality, and durability of training effects. Therefore, it was concluded that physical fitness training have rules to maintain the increased physical fitness after special kendo practice and to improve more effectively basal physical fitness.
