Since the 19th century, the Masaccio-Masolino problem regarding the frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel, has been antagonistically discussed in connection with the problem of attribution of the frescoes in the church of St. Clement in Rome and of some other works in question. However, after the last war, the restoration of the frescoes in the St. Clement and of the "Sant' Anna" in the Uffizi Gallery having been accomplished, a new clue to criticism on the style of these two painters was brought to light to a certain degree. Consequently, it seems that the Masaccio-Masolino problem has now reached the stage of a new study. so I researched this problem from style-critical and chronological point of view, distinguishing the works attributed confusedly to them into Masaccio's and Masolino's. However, as to the question when these two painters collaborated in the Brancacci Chapel, I could not but leave it unsolved. I regret that now I have not any authority here in Japan to decide the date of the collaboration of these two painters in the Brancacci ; whether it is before the Masolino's departure for Hungary or after his return from Hungary to Florence. The solution of this question must be attained by more advanced study.
