"K'i yun cheng tong" in the "Six Canons" of the theory of Chinese paintings by Hsieh Ho have been interpreted in very many ways. I have tried to define the proper position of these interpretations within the whole perspective of the theories of Chinese paintings, anticipating a better understanding of the meaning of "K'i yun cheng tong". The theories on Chinese paintings may be classified into the following three factors, namely, mental plan of the artist, subject matter and composition, and brush technique. "K'i yun" therefore, may rightly be understood only when viewed in relation to these three factors.
