Kyoto City University of Arts owns Japanese-style paintings executed for graduation from the Meiji Period (1868-1912) up to the present. I have classified these works of the Meiji Period according to the genre (figures, landscape, animals, birds & flowers) and investigated the changes from the traditional to the modernstyle paintings. In tracing these changes, I have discovered the following facts. The modernization of the traditional painting occurred from 1901 to 1905. Mainly responsible was TAKEUCHI Seiho for the change who was a teacher at Biko (School of Fine Arts and Crafts). He had visited France to look at the Paris World Fair 1900, and then traveled around Europe. From this experience he discovered the essence of the Japanese-style paintings. After returning to Japan, he put emphasis on Shasei (drawing from nature). As the basic method of Biko Shifted from Tehon (drawing from a model pictures), works for graduation came to be modernized. By following the plates in order, we can trace changes in landscape paintings, for example. After 1905 graduation paintings concentrated on animals, birds & flowers because Shasei proved to be very effective in these genres.
