1. The ultra-violet absorption spectra of purified xanthine oxidase, catalase and haemine have been measured.
2. A band with a maximum at 279 mμ in the absorption spectrum of xanthine oxidase (pH 7) was found.
3. The absorption spectrum of xanthine oxidase shifted towards the longer wavelength of the spectrum when in an alkaline solution.
4. The absorption band of liver catalase was the same as that of the blood one, showing two absorption bands at 406 and 266 mμ respectively.
5. Haemine showed a band at 406 mμ.
6. Flavine from liver as well as from red blood corpuscle had no relation to catalase and xanthine oxidase.
The author is greatly indebted to Prof. Dr. K. Kodama for his kind criticisms and suggestions throughout this research.
