1. The distribution of respiratory enzymes and cytochrome compondnts in subcellular fractions of a halotolerant Micro-coccus grown anaerobically in the presence of nitrate has been studied.
2. It has been shown that among cyto-chrome components cytochrome c-554 (I) is the most effective electron donor for nitrate reductase, while cytochrome c-551 is the best for the terminal oxidase.
3. The brown protein has been shown to function as an intermediary electron car-rier in the nitrate and oxygen respiration systems.
4. Nitrate reductase and terminal oxidase have been solubilized from the particulate fraction in the presence of pancreatic lipase, snake venom and sodium deoxycholate. Some properties of these enzymes have been described.
5. A possible scheme illustrating the electron transfer sequence in the Micrococcus has been presented.
The auther wishes to express his thanks to Prof. F. Egami and Dr. S. Taniguchi for their valuable advice during this work. He is also greatly indebted to Profs. I. Uritani, S. Suzuki and R. Sato for their kind critism of the manuscript. This investigation was supported by a grant from the Ministry of Education.
