The effects of cyanide, bisulfite and hydroxylamine on inhibition of cytochrome oxidase [EC 1. 9. 3. 1] by azide were examined. The results strongly suggest that azide, cyanide and bisulfite combine competitively with the same site on cytochrome oxidase, and that this site is also one of the hydroxylamine-binding sites.
