抄録

We present a brief review of dynamical models of traffic flow. The car following model has a long history and many models have been proposed for the purpose of engineering. However these models cannot explain how traffic congestion emerge. The optimal velocity (OV) model is one of the car following models and is proposed from the physical viewpoint. The OV model can explain the formation mechanism of traffic congestion and can reproduce the behavior of traffic flow fairly well. In this model, congestion phenomena can be understood as a kind of the phase transition.
