Traffic data observed on expressways shows that traffic flow phenomena have various features in addition to freely-moving and jam phases. It also reveals the effectiveness and limitation of mathematical models for traffic flow. Most traffic flow models treat expressways with one lane. On the contrary, real expressways usually have more than two lanes. If we pay attention to phenomena characteristic to multi-lane expressways, we can find new features such as correlations between lanes and lane-changing behavior.
