This paper surveys and assesses researches on vehicular traffic flow from the traffic engineering aspects. Since measurements on traffic flow are quite essential, several techniques, passage identifications on roadway sections or networks, application of image processing and on-board devices, are briefly introduced. After discussion on the fundamental characteristics of traffic flow, the paper raises unsolved bottleneck phenomena at motorway homogeneous sections. It is followed by the reviews on the modeling of car -following behavior to answer the questions. Controls of traffic flow at intersections and road networks are shown that they have another unsolved topics within the traffic engineering. Finally, introduction of intelligent transport systems is mentioned to have a possibility to change the context of traffic flow. Further researches on traffic flow from every viewpoint are quite necessary.
