Abstract

This is a study on grammatical development in English language of Japanese children who are learning in an immersion setting at Kato Gyosyu Elementary School in Numazu. Twelve participants volunteered to have an individual interview to be examined how their syntactic structures are developed over the first year of learning through the medium of second language, English. The results showed that their first year development is significant in producing sentence structures, especially the development of the students who have no second language experience before entering the school.
