Abstract
The paper reports on the impact upon Fukui National College of Technology students of a two-week English course at Ballarat University in Australia. 17 students of Fukui National College of Technology had an opportunity to take part in overseas study of English in 2006. A follow-up survey of students, carried out in spring, 2007, indicated that they perceived an improvement in their language skills and were encouraged to study English. According to the findings, it is clear that the short-term overseas study of English has positively influenced the students' learning of English. This paper shows how the students were motivated and examines how autonomous learning of English can be developed in the classroom.
