Nakamura Masanao translated Smiles' Self-Help and received a great response. Nakamura have moved to England at the end of the Edo period and was an intellectual who represents the early Meiji era. Self-Help was very welcomed by Japanese people seeking a successful career and studying western civilization. More than 1 million people read this book. The tendency to respect efforts and humble the poor has spread in Japan. The emphasis on art and technology in this book was not accepted.
