Somatic chromosomes of two plants of Artemisia gilvescens from Tokushima Prefecture and Tonaki Island of the Ryukyus were compared using the standard aceto-orcein squash method. Both plants exhibited a chromosome number of 2n = 34. However, ordinal positions of submedian-centromeric chromosomes within the chromosome length series differed between the two plants. Our chromosome observation indicates that A. gilvescens should be taxonomically treated as an independent species, distinct from A. koidzumii with 2n = 36 and 54, and A. montana with 2n = 51, 52, 53 and 54.
