Abstract
Production of protonemal gemmae were newly reported in Buxbaumia minakatae. They accumulate to form conical masses in various locations on protonema mats developing on the surface of substrata (rotten trunk of Cryptomeria japonica). The protonemal gemmae found in B. minakatae are similar to those of a closely related species, B. viridis, in the features that they are multicellular at maturation and produced at the tips of well-branched filamentous stalks. The protonemal gemmae of B. viridis are distinctly mammillose with an oval spheroidal outline, whereas, those of B. minakatae are almost smooth or slightly mammillose and cylindrical with a length of about 40‒100 µm and a diameter of about 30 µm.
