As a result of pollen analysis on the bog"Tanohira" situated at Shiga-kogen, Prefecture Nagano, the following stages in the history of forests, in this area were obtained from the bottom : The 1st period was characterized by coniferous-deciduous broad-leaved mixed forests of Pinus and Betula. The 2nd period was one of mixed oak forest in which Fagus, Ulmus and Betula appeared. In the 3rd period Tsuga and Abies spread while Quercus and Fagus were still important. The final stage was marked by an increase of Pinus. These periods may be correspond respectively Nakamura's zonation RIII, RIII-II, RII, RII-I.
