Polyacrylic acid cross-linked by esterification with polyvinyl alcohol was used as a sample of mechano-chemical systems.In order to investigate the origin of elongations and contractions of the system, the relation between tension and temperature under the constant length was measured in pure water and acid or alkali solutions. These results are shown by the following equation.

Thermodynamically, this means that energy effect cannot be neglected compare with entropy effect when the system swells in the solutions. Energy effect, however, appears also in the case of the film of PVA. So. it seems that energy effect is not a particular phenomena of the mechano-chemical system, and that this supports the justification of the theory that the swelling of the system attributes to the entropy force of the gegen ions in the system.
