The Systematic Principles and Their Pedagogical Implications Underlying the Use of Paraphrase as a Communication Strategy Based on an Analysis of Longman Active Study Dictionary of English in Terms of Its Word Definitions

Abstract

This study investigates the word definitions used in Longman Active Study Dictionary of English in order to do concrete research on teaching communication strategies(CSs) in terms of a process approach. An attempt is made to investigate only paraphrase, one of the most useful communication strategies. Our study has revealed that 'a superordinate term + postmodification' structure is used most frequently in the word definitions. It seems to be the most useful structure for paraphrase.
