Abstract

The purpose of this study is to search for the effects of a participative course for young women relating to awareness and feelings toward satoyama, and the processes relating to awareness of conservation and transmission of satoyama. Therefore, a participative course incorporating forest management, charcoal-making and forest walks was conducted for 37 female university students, and for comparison a classroom-learning-based course was conducted for 61 female university students. Results showed that the participative course improved awareness and feelings toward the satoyama by a greater margin. This also revealed the processes of consciousness such as knowledge, interest and motivation relating to awareness of conservation and transmission of satoyama, and it became clear that these processes are influenced by recognition of the profitability, acquisition of conservation methods, as well as by recognition of its beauty and joy.
