Abstract

This study aimed to examine the characteristics of street littering in Japanese and Malaysian university students by comparing their opinions about the reasons and solutions for littering in the respective countries. The results of text mining on statement data revealed that respondents’ primary concerns are related to the lack of street dustbins in both countries. The results also suggest that the Japanese respondents believe that maintaining a clean environment on the streets in practice can prevent littering, while the Malaysian respondents believe that raising public awareness by education could contribute to avoiding littering. We discussed the potential influence of socio-cultural characteristics on these differences.
