Abstract

This research investigates the understanding of the current state and components of Japanese gardens built in England from the late 19th century to the present. In order to grasp the number of these gardens, a literature survey has been conducted. 41 gardens have been extracted from 4 literatures. The extracted chronological table is divided into early period 1850 ~1949 and developing period 1950 ~. The results suggested that the Japanese garden style developed in England was influenced by “strolling garden” in early period and “dry garden” in developing period. It was suggested that the Japanese gardens in England differed in form depending on the time when the gardens were created, and were influenced by the historical background.
