Abstract

In order to analyze the effect of internet use on the improvement or reduction of psychological resilience, we employed structural equation modeling on longitudinal survey data that were collected from university students. The results showed that students who predominantly utilize the internet for making empathic exchanges, for sharing both their hardships and joys while providing mutual online encouragement, as well as for consuming moving images that arouses their vitality and energizes their mental state, tended to show higher levels of resilience. Conversely, students with a propensity for internet addiction tended to show diminished resilience. Thus, the results suggest the possibility of improving resilience by altering how the internet is utilized.
