Abstract

We surveyed 13 woody biomass combined heat and power (CHP) facilities, tracing upstream log supply, midstream fuel production, and downstream CHP supply to final power and heat demand. Furthermore, we determined the exergy (Ex) utilization rate of the entire local circular system (LCS) and compared the degree of effective utilization of biomass resources. CHP capacity and fuel were selected based on upstream and midstream fuel supply, taking into consideration the balance between downstream power and heat demand. By adopting highly efficient equipment such as heat pumps and LED lighting to increase the Ex of electricity demand and incorporating hot water supply, air conditioning, and drying to increase the Ex utilization rate of heat demand, we can achieve an LCS that has a high Ex and contributes to decarbonization through optimal design efforts from the planning stage of buildings and facilities, including building applications.
