Abstract

It has been reported that concrete containing alginine, a kind of amino acid, could promote the growth of microalga on concrete surface during the setting in marine environment, which would improve the habitat for fishes in the sea. On the other hand, the basic property of alginine can increase the hydroxide ion concentration in the pore solution of concrete, which may contribute to promote the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash or the latent hydraulic property of blast furnace slag in concrete.
Considering this background, in this study, the influence of alginine dosage on the self-healing performance of fly ash concrete or concrete using blast furnace slag cement was investigated. Self-healing by immersing into hot water at the temperature of 40℃ was applied to concrete damaged by the compressive loading. As a result, compressive strength values of the damaged fly ash concrete or the concrete using blast furnace slag cement increased over the initial values due to applying self-healing promotion, while the cases of damaged normal concrete showed the decrease of compressive strength even after the self-healing promotion. Moreover, the dosage of alginine into fly ash concrete improved the self-healing effect from the viewpoints of increase of compressive strength or the decrease of the water permeation rate with the closing of concrete cracks due to the promoted self-healing.
