Abstract
We used the new cephem antibiotic cefpirome (CPR) to treat 15 patients with complicated urinary tract infections hospitalized in the urology departments of the Akita University School of Medicine, and related hospitals.
The 15 cases included 6 of chronic complicated cystitis, 4 of chronic complicated pyelonephritis, and 5 of post prostatectomy infection. Administration was by intravenous drip infusion of 1g of CPR b.i.d. morning and evening for 5 consecutive days. Evaluation based on the Criteria for Complicated UTI Drug Efficacy (3rd ed.) was possible in 14 cases. Clinical efficacy was excellent in 3, moderate in 7 and poor in 4 cases, with an efficacy rate of 71.4%.
Bacteriological efficacy showed elimination of 12 of 17 strains isolated from urine, with an elimination rate of 70.6%. No particular side effects were noted with this drug of high utility.
