Stress concentration has a significant effect on fatigue performance of welded joints. In order to reduce stress concentration of welded joints, a mathematical design method of tensile triangles (MTT) is applied to weld shape design. Five weld shapes are designed and the stress concentration is investigated by in-house FEM software JWRAIN. It is found that the largest stress concentration is induced in corner boxing fillet welded joint. Whereas those welded joints including elongated weld bead are possessed of lower stress concentration and their stress concentration factor (Scf) is not more than 1.33. Compared with other design methods, MTT design can dramatically decrease stress concentration near weld toe with lowest Scf of 1.05, demonstrating the very essence of MTT design.
