This paper examines the feasibility of using a bus rapid transit (BRT) system to replace a planned subway extension in a suburban area through a feasibility study of a BRT replacement project for the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line Rakusai Extension Project. The feasibility of the BRT replacement project was verified through an inter-annual cost analysis and an inter-annual revenue and expenditure analysis derived from the results of demand forecasts. The results of the inter-annual income/expenditure analysis showed a surplus, indicating that the project considered in this study to replace the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line Rakusai Extension with BRT has a high possibility of being feasible. The findings of this study suggest that the feasibility of replacing the planned subway extension in suburban areas with a bus rapid transit system is affected by the "percentage of people who switch from using small cars to using BRT. replacement project for the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line Rakusai Extension Project. We consider that the findings of this study suggest that the feasibility of replacing the planned subway extension in suburban areas with a bus rapid transit system is affected by "the number of passengers transferred from existing bus routes" and "the percentage of modal shift from small cars.
