Synchronous L cells obtained by a selection method were used to study changes in oxygen uptake, lactate production, and ATP turnover time during the cell cycle. The oxygen uptake per cell (Q02) fluctuated periodically with the maximum at S phase and the minimum at G1 phase. The rate of lactate production per cell was kept constant during the initial 14 hours (G1 and S phases) and gradually decreased to one-half at 24 hours after reinoculation. The calculated ATP production per unit cell volume (ium3) indicated a value of 10-15 moles per hour during the cell cycle. The ATP turnover time oscillatedevery 15 to 19 seconds during the cell cycle, being shorter in early G1 and S phases. These data suggest that ATP utilization increases in G1 and S phases.
