The effect of paraquat (a kind of herbicides) on the mitochondrial energy transfer reaction was investigated. Paraquat stimulated state 4 respiration, and it decreased the respiratory control index, by 30 percent at a dose of about 100μM. Paraquat did not release K+ from mitochondria and also did not affect latent mitochondrial ATPase activity, indicating that it has little injurious effect on mitochondrial membrane.
