The photocatalytic activities of Zn-smectites were compared. Organic dyes were intercalated into Zn-smectite thin films mounted on a quartz substrate. Decomposition of organic dyes under UV light experiences a change in color to become transparent. A decrease in the intensity of MB band at 670 nm and the RB band at 570nm is simultaneously detected by UV/VIS spectrometry. The photocatalytic activity of Zn-smectites decreases in the order stevensite-saponite-hectorite.
