A comparison examination about the quality between the electro-slag remelted and vacuum arc remelted high carbon-chromium bearing steel of JIS SUJ3 whose ingot weight and diameter were 250kg and about 230mm respectively was made.
The results are as follows:
(1) Rolling fatigue life of ESR material was longer than VAR material in the case of specimens sampled from a billet of forging ratio 10 keeping the sampling direction in parallel to that of forging. At the forging ratio 2, two material showed nearly the same fatigue life.
(2) It was assumed that the difference of fatigue life of the above written ESR and VAR materials depended upon the spheroidized carbide distribution and the looseness of matrix.
(3) It was concluded that ESR material was better than VAR material as far as the large diameter bearing steel is concerned.
