It is said that the shape of temporomandibular joint of human varies due to change of occlusion beside matrix disease.
In order to make this theory clear, the author carried out the radiographic evaluations of its morphological change by standardized transcranial radiography with bi-directional system deviced in our department.
By using of the study purpose, totally subjects were used and they are chiefly devided into two groups as follows. One group is making of thirty young adults (male 18, female 12) having normal dentition and temporomandibular joint function and the another is thirty older adults (male 17, female 13) wearing complete denture having good occlusion.
Cephalostat was furnished to ensure the reproducibility of radiograms in the apparatus. On the radiograms, standard measuring line pallarelling with Frankfort plane was depicted with lead.
Six measuring points are marked on radiograms as shown in Fig.5.The measurement of distance between their points were done to obtain the size of fossa on radiograms directly and the other measurement was done to obtain the tendency of form of fossa on the picture magnifying with 5 times of original ragiograms. The morphological change of temporomandibular joint was evaluated with obtained data within groups.
As a result of those comprehensive research efforts, the author arrived at the follow-ing conclusions.
1.It was revealed that size of mandibular fossa of male adults on radiogram was larger than of female.
2.In remodelling of mandibular fossa, tuberculum changed to higher position was found in complete denture wearer group as compared to male adult group but no differences were found regarding the deepest point of fossa.
3.For evaluation of contour of fossa, the gradient of anterior and posterior wall of fossa was slightly gentler in female adult group than in male adult group.
4.Regarding as the form of fossa, little differences were found between young adult group and complete denture wearer group of less than four years experience. However, the increasing of differences were found in complete denture wearer group of more than four years as compared with young adult group.
