The result obtained are as follows : 1. The growing of rice cultivated on soil where previously there was pear garden, was markedly harmful. The length of leaves and stems became shorter, seeds did not ripen completely, and yield decreased. The toxicity seems to be due to poisoning of Pb-arsenate sprayed on the pear orchard before. 2. When 300〜500 lbs per acre of sulphur were added to the soil, there was no visible injury to the plants and it may also be recognized that the arsenic injury to the plants was rather stronger than the injury of lead. The reason toxicity was prevented seem; to be that the arsenic compounds became insoluble by the combination of As and S.
