A simple method for estimating the exchangeable bases in soils was proposed. To the NH_4Ac leacheate of soils is added an excess of H_2C_2O_4 and Ca is determined with ordinary method. The filtrate is evaporated to dryness and ignited at 600°for ten minutes to convert the remaining bases (Mg, K, Na) into carbonates, which are then converted into Chlorides by the treatment with conc. HCl. On igmition at about 550°for thirty minutes, MgCl_2 changes into oxide while K and Na remain as chlorides, the former is determined with alkalimetry and the latter with argentometry. The result obtained with this method was quite satisfactory.
