Abstract

About 7,000 current titles of Western periodicals are acquired through dealers by the University of Tokyo. The University has many faculty or institute libraries which add up to 76 and materials are handled by more than 30 dealers or agents. In 1970 fiscal year, the General Library (main library) became the acquisition center for Western periodicals after 4 years' examination. On the other hand, Iibrary automation study group in General Library had concluded the acquisitional work of periodicals is the first step of library automation. And it is limited to Western languages because the treatment of Chinese character still stay undeveloped. Committee on Computer for Library Works and Information Retrieval; a subcommittee of University of Tokyo Computer Committee had organized a working group which consisted of librarians and academic members. In Spring of 1970, an interim report was issued by the working group. The Library staff is working to achieve the project by end of this fiscal year consulting with Data Processing Center of the University in which computer OKITAC 5090C is used. Automation in this step, a great deal of merits are estimated. However the considerable problems of this house keeping project which could not be realized are connection with international standard especially in coding of code number of each periodical (title abbreviation, too), and computerization of Chinese characters.
