Referral file is a database of bibliographic information on foreign-language material, acquired at the University of Tokyo Library. The database is accessed on-line through TOOL-IR, an inter-university on-line information retrieval system. Since the last report, the system and the database were expanded to accommodate costant inflow of material. A large part of the collection was found to consist of monograph series and serials. Numerical data such as years and volumes were added to the index to identify each volume in the series. Author names were indexed in their segments as well as in the full form. This allows for diversified retrieval, necessary for overcoming the instability in their notations. As all the data elements including words in the title, the classification code, the shelf code and the language code, were indexed, most retrieval needs are expected to be satisfied.
