D. H. Lawrence was fascinated by a deep underlying god when he met Indians in New Mexico. This inspiration was developed in St. Mawr's motif when the heroine, Lou Witt was awakened from her barren life with her husband. Being different from her husband, St. Mawr has given Lou the feeling that she has finally found what she has long desired. After meeting St. Mawr, however, Lou realized that her life should not be bothered by daily trivialities but should be in seach of her inner god, which only St. Mawr had.
