Contrary to the Romantic view of the author and his life as important for the creation of Art, the Russian Formalist Movement in the 1920s centered on the artwork. Besides some theoretical articles who mainly raised the question of the difference between the plot and the story, Vladimir Propp tried to analyze (authorless) fairy tales. These initial studies were reconsidered in the 1960s in France, specially in the Communications review. In this review, Christian Metz, Tzvetan Todorov, and Gérard Genette laid the foundations for the theory of narratology.
A clarification of the main terminology of narratology and its origins is given.
