The chloro-manganese(III) complex of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-n-dodecylphenyl) porphyrin was prepared and its mesomorphic properties were studied by polarised-light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The TCNQ'-complex was also prepared and analyzed by similar means. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the complexes were performed by use of SQUID magnetometry between the temperatures of 5 and 400K. The chloro-manganese(III) complex exhibits a discotic lamellar mesophase and has an unusually low clearing temperature compared to the other metallocomplexes of this porphyrin. Additionally, upon phase transitions, significant discontinuities occur in the magnetic susceptibility indicating that some change in magnetic behaviour is associated with the change of phase. Magnetic susceptibility of the TCNQ'-complex reveals formation of ferrimagnetic chains below 180K.
