The ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCS) with a naphthalene ring have a bookshelf layer structure for the particular alignment film in the chiral smectic-C (SmC) phase, and thus they have been a matter of great interest from the points of both basic research and applications to display devices. Therefore, we have investigated in the molecular structure and dynamics in the SmC phase by using polarized infrared and time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. Infrared spectroscopy enables one to investigate molecular structure and alignment because it gives much information of molecular vibrations. In this study we observed that a carbonyl group in this sample had different alignment from another one, and we have suggested a molecular structure model from the alignments of each carbonyl group.
