Anomalous molecular alignment of liquid crystalline conducting polymer including triple bonds in the main chain, poly(2,5-dialkoxy -p-phenylenebutadiynylene), has been studied. The uniform molecular alignment with high quality in a sandwich cell has been realized by means of a conventional rubbing technique. It has been found that, instead of mesogenic main chain, alkoxy side chain aligns along the rubbing direction. This anomalous molecular alignment has been confirmed using polarizing spectroscopic measurements such as Raman, absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies.
