Polythienylene derivatives with ferroelectric liquid crystaglinity (FLC) were synthesized by introducing fluorine-containing chiral liquid crystalline substituents into the 3-position of thiophene rings. The polymers synthesized were fusible and soluble in ordinary organic solvents. Measurements of DSC, POM, and XRD indicated that the polymers have various liquid crystalline phases. Particularly, two of them showed chiral smectic C (Sc) phase, characteristic of the ferroelectric liquid crystallinity. Electrical and optical properties of the polymers were discussed.
