Liquid crystalline (LC) aromatic conjugated polymers such as poly(p-phenyiene)s and poly(p- phenylenevinylene)s substituted with LC groups in side chains (LC-PPPs and LC-PPVs) were macroscopically aligned under magnetic field to construct mono-domain structures. The alignments were carried out by applying the magnetic force of 10 Tesla into the polymers under LC temperatumo Analysis of aligned textures of polarizing optical, microscope and X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that LC side chains and the main chain in the di-substituted LC-PPVs are oriented parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field, respectively. However, it is particular interest that in the case of mono-substituted LC-PPPs and LC-PPVs, both the LC side chains and even the maim chains are oriented parallel to the magnetic field. IR and UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of the aligned polymers showed optical dichroism.
