Recently, novel conjugated polymers, liquid crystalline (LC) polythienylene derivatives, were synthesized by introducing LC substituents into the 3-position of thiophene rings, to generate anisotropies in both electrical and optical properties. The polymers showed enantiotropic smectic A or B phase and fluorescence. Here, we report the magnefically forced alignment of these polymers. X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated that the LC side chains and the main chains are oriented parallel and perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field, respectively, producing a macroscopic alignment of the polymers. The high alignment of the polymers was also confirmed from dichroism in infrared spectra. The polymers showed dichroic fluorescence with ratios of 1.5〜3.5.
