The composite system composed of a self-assemble low molecular weight gelling agent and a liquid crystal formed a spherulite-like aggregate upon continuous cooling from an isotropic composite. On the other hand, the spherulite-like aggregation did not exist in the composite system which was gelated by holding the isotropic composite at the temperature just below the solgel transition temperature(isothermal gelation). Atomic force microscopic observation revealed that the fiber-like aggregate of ca. 110 nm in diameter was formed in the composite system prepared by the isothermal gelation method. The composite system prepared by the isothermal gelation method exhibited the about 100 % light transmittance upon the application of an electric voltage of 25 Vrms. This indicates that the control of the cooling process is a predominant factor for the electro-optical properties for the composite system.
