Completely separated LC and polymer layers, which are totally different from PDLCs, can be obtained by choosing a suitable combination of LC and UV polymer materials. If such the LC cell is prepared by irradiating the UV light through a photomask, we can easily make LC optical devices with a relief structure. However, the formation process and mechanism of such the layer structure have not been clear so far. In this paper, we have prepared some LC cells with the layer structure using various substrate surfaces, LC materials and UV monomers, and the observation results are investigated from the viewpoint of some material parameters.
