Abstract
Reflective color LCDs with high resolution are key devices for highly functional portable information terminals. In this paper, we numerically analyzed the electro-optical properties of new achromatic reflective LCDs using a single-polarizer DSTN-LCD and FDSTN-LCD with a quarter-wave plate. We found that the display modes exhibit a high contrast ratio of infinity in theory and a high luminous reflectance of 48%, independent of the duty ratio. In addition, we found that a panel using the display modes exhibits a high contrast ratio by optimizing the driving voltage and/or material parameters independent of the duty ratio.
